Proverbs 18:23 (KJV)
The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.

One can’t help but observe the difference a dollar makes in a person’s conduct as you read this verse…

When we are facing impoverished conditions, we lack power. Therefore, it becomes necessary to ask for the essentials of life. Naturally, it behooves the poor individual to make a humble request of those they are dependent upon, otherwise the odds of not getting their need met is increased by faulty approach. People at a disadvantage might not always receive right treatment but they are usually very alert to their method of communication…

The rich, on the other hand, aren’t as conscious of their manners. In fact, they tend to leave off politeness and take on rough ways because they think their money speaks for them. A false sense of self-worth is achieved with every dime added to their account. And society is inclined to bestow favorable treatment upon rich persons… Consequently, there is little incentive for the prosperous to change because money talks!

Now, how could we apply this verse to our lives? Well, ladies, let me ask you what happens to you when you get a few dollars to your name… If you were to do some work on the side and bring in extra income, or even hold a full-time job, does money change the way you relate to your husband? Do you tend to “answer him roughly” just because you raised your wealth a bit? Oh, I know you might not be rich per say, but you are richer as a result of the extra money… So then, how swayed are you by cash flow? How does money talk through you?

Ladies, if you dared to be honest about the tendencies of your own heart, you would admit that if you receive wages of any amount, your level of independence tends to rise with every dime you make – especially when you start rolling in the dough!

As you deposit your paycheck into the bank you also deposit authority into your account as a woman and little by little your conduct is altered – at home, in the world, and probably in the church too! Your attitude switches from lowly to rough, as the Bible illustrates in the verse above. You can get mad if you want, but it’s true! Money talks TO you and money talks THROUGH you… Am I saying you should never strive to raise your level of income? No, I am saying you should be careful that your pride is not elevated in the process… Are you as alert to your method of communication as you were when your needs were higher than your salary now is? Has earning money altered your answers at all?

How did you talk to your husband BEFORE you started working? How do you talk to your husband when you aren’t earning money for yourself? Is there a noticeable difference? It’s something to think about. It’s something to be on guard about. It’s something to be honest about. It might even need to be something you have to correctDoes the Holy Spirit have more influence over you than a dollar does? How would God answer that question?

God Bless,
Pam
